Guilford County Department of Public Health - Refugee Health Services

Refugee health services are available for individuals with refugee, asylee, or parolee status who have relocated to the United States and currently live in Guilford County. Amerasian, Cuban/Haitian, and victims of severe forms of trafficking also qualify for services. Refugee children (birth to 20 years old) will receive an initial assessment, but will then be referred to health care providers in the community to establish a permanent medical home.

US Citizenship classes are offered through the UNCG Center for New North Carolinians. The Refugee School Impact Program addresses the challenges refugee families face in accessing educational services for children during their first 5 years in the U.S. and provides parent focused assistance, in-school services, and after-school services. Children 6-15 years old can participate in the 10-week long Summer Literacy, Acts, Music and Movement SLAMM) program. After-school services include tutoring 5 days per week, social enrichment activities twice per week, summer programming twice weekly at each community center, and field trips 6 times per year.

Project BARK - Spay and Neuter Financial Assistance

Project BARK provides spay and neuter financial assistance for dogs and cats.  Pet parents are eligible if their income falls below the federal poverty line or if they are recipients of financial/government benefits.  Appointments are available to Guilford County residents. They work through the James Landing Veterinary Hospital, Sheets Pet Clinic, High Point Veterinary Hospital and The Humane Society. There is $10 fee for small dogs and cats and $15 for large dogs.

UNCG Speech and Hearing Clinical Services

The UNCG Speech and Hearing Clinic is open to the community and provides the following services:

  • Tinnitus and Hyperacusis Management
  • Cochlear implants
  • Vestibular assessment
  • Aural rehabilitation
  • Hearing evaluation / Hearing aids
  • Speech diagnostic & therapy
  • Central auditory processing (CAP)
  • Assistive listening devices
  • Auditory evoked potentials
  • Transgender services

Patients are seen on a sliding scale fee- the only insurance accepted is Medicare. Patients do not need a referral and can make online, curbside, and face-to-face appointments.

West End Ministries - Senior Activities

Senior Activities are held twice a month for anyone ages 60 and older. Musical entertainment, movies, field trips, Bingo, food boxes, and wellness checks are available. Bingo is on the fourth Tuesday of the month at 1:00 PM.

The Health and Wellness program serves refugees who have experienced severe loss and trauma. Services include on-site therapy and counseling, individual and family case management for those with serious medical needs, transportation, a community garden to grow their own food, education, and collaboration with local healthcare providers.

YWCA - Latino Family Center

The Latino Family Center offers a mentoring program for middle and high school girls and boys through personal and social skill development to build self-esteem.  Services offered include a STEM club, an Art Club, and higher education guidance. The Center also offers a community access program (El Pueblo) that provides outreach services, information, and referral services to Latinos, including DACA renewals.  There are also several leadership programs available. Services provided in Spanish.
