It all started with a commitment to have a conversation. On April 9, 2019, Dr. Patrick Harman of the Hayden-Harman Foundation hosted a screening of the “Resilience” documentary about the impacts of adverse childhood experiences. Understanding that trauma has continuing and lasting impacts on children and families, he wanted to do something about it.
He invited leaders of local nonprofits to attend the screening. At the screening’s conclusion, he asked for a commitment to have one conversation about trauma and building resilience. The first conversation led to another conversation which led to another. Soon, a committed core of leaders were meeting twice a month to begin collaborating on building systems for a compassionate community.
A needs assessment was conducted and convenings followed to initiate collaborations. COVID-19 shifted events virtually but the work continues. HighPointResources.org was created to inform citizens about COVID-19 and available resources. Sanitation stations were installed to support hygiene for those experiencing homeless.

"Creating resilient communities is a vital part of the work of community action. Our commitment to citizens living in marginalized communities who experience trauma on a daily basis, navigating systems that are not user friendly, accessing services that are difficult to obtain, is our reason for participating in Resilience High Point. We all must and can do better to make the City of High Point a better place to live."
